Ravenhill Construction built Cady Mountain, a hilltop retreat in the San Juan Islands designed by Prentiss + Balance + Wickline Architects and completed in 2003. Set at the summit of a small mountain, the property balances the owners' wish for seclusion with sweeping views to the east, south and west.
We've returned in 2026 to construct a modern carport with a steel moment frame which supports a shed roof. Modern architecture meets simple utility, featuring solar panels and electric car charging stations.

The retreat is made up of three distinct buildings: a main house, a sleeping cabin and a guest house. Each stands on its own, yet they relate to one another through their arrangement on the site and a shared palette of materials.
Living in harmony with the surrounding landscape was central to the design. Natural materials that reflect the character of the site and the Pacific Northwest tie the buildings to their setting, with wood playing a leading role in everything from the structural framing to the exterior siding and interior finishes.

Inside, the warmth of the wood is paired with clean, simple detailing and generous natural light, keeping the focus on the landscape just beyond the windows.
Environmental sensitivity guided the project throughout, following best-practice principles of solar design. Each structure is carefully sited, the buildings are topped with sod roofs, and a concrete fireplace in the main house acts as thermal mass, soaking up the sun's warmth and releasing it slowly, while also serving as the visual anchor of the whole design.
