A 3,600-square-foot, cutting-edge sustainable home, The Natural Balance House, located near Friday Harbor, was completed in 2014. It uses current ‘green’ systems and technologies including a cistern harvesting rainwater, geothermal in-floor radiant heating, solar water heating and extensive use of recycled and sustainable materials throughout the house.
From the Seattle PI: The "Natural Balance" house, in Friday Harbor, on San Juan Island, is the first house in the San Juans targeting top-level platinum certification through the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Program, according to the project.
Blue Sky Design designed the house, which Ravenhill Construction built for owners Glen and Deb Bruels. Features include a 19,500-gallon cistern that harvests rainwater as the sole water source for the home, a 3,000-square-foot green roof, at vehicle turntable to minimize the size of the driveway and garage, extensive automation for efficiency, Structural Insulated Panels, geothermal in-floor radiant heating, solar hot-water heating, a heat recovery ventilation system to supply pre-conditioned fresh air, efficient LED lighting and appliances, and extensive use of recycled and sustainable materials, including reclaimed urban wood furniture by Meyer Wells.
