Ravenhill Construction completed this primary residence and guest house in the San Juan Islands in 2025. Designed by Grayscale Design Studio and Allied8, the buildings are sited in a line to make the most of the peaceful setting and water views across the lagoon.

The Art House Project sits on a four-acre sloped site in the San Juan Islands and includes a main house and a guest house. Grayscale Design Studio led the interior architecture and Allied8 designed the shell and core. The two buildings were designed to relate to each other in siting and style.
The guest house was built first. It's about 1,200 square feet, with a ramped entry and a living area with custom walnut built-ins. The kitchen has chartreuse and lime accents, and a custom macramé screen separates the bedroom. A covered deck gives shade and protection from the rain.

Designed on a single level so the owners can age in place, the main house opens into the great room and kitchen. The two spaces flow together in an open layout, with a custom screen anchored to built-in casework creating a semi-transparent division between them. A brick-clad fireplace and custom window seat add warmth, while a muted palette and stained oak finishes provide a quiet backdrop for the owners' colorful art collection.
Off the kitchen, a greenhouse and garden terrace offers a sheltered outdoor space, protected from the winds that can sweep across the front of the home. The primary suite, laundry and powder room sit just behind the kitchen, while the far side of the terrace connects to the guest house and a mudroom leading out to the garage.
